Street/Begging Elephants

Elephants walking on the streets of India and Thailand is a common sight. These elephants are used as props for the purposes of begging. They fare no better than any of the other animals used for entertainment purposes, and they suffer the same barbaric treatment and lack of care. They are usually chained and controlled through the infliction of pain or threats of it. They are not fed sufficiently, are dehydrated, and forced to work long hours without rest or shelter. Animal retaliation with fatal consequences can also occur.
