Global March for Elephants and Rhinos – 2016
On September 24th the world united again in the third Global March for Elephants and Rhinos.
Once again, over 130 cities around the world marched on that day to demand an end to poaching, an end to the ivory and rhino horn trade, and greater protection for these two species that are still threatened with extinction.
This year the Global March took place on the opening day of CoP17, the CITES conference in Johannesburg. Crucial decisions were made about elephants and rhinos, including an important resolution to ban all ivory trade worldwide.
The London march was a big success, with a large turnout (around 1,000 people) and a stellar cast of speakers that included Virginia McKenna, Ian Redmond, Simon Jones, Stanley Johnson, Ruth Powys, Dominic Dyer and Nicky Campbell.
At the end of the march we delivered a letter to Theresa May at No. 10 Downing St, calling on the UK government to implement a complete ban on all ivory trade in the UK. The letter was signed by around 100 leading conservationists, NGOs, MPs and celebrities.
